11 Ways to Disguise School as Real Life

Most days, Channing watches a science video.

Nobody assigned it to him. There is no worksheet afterward and no quiz on Friday. He usually chooses something about weather because he loves storms, and when something catches his attention, we talk about it.

That counts as science in my house.

School starts for Channing in September, and I have been thinking a lot about what learning actually looks like. Traditional school has never been a particularly good fit for him. He is capable of learning complicated things, but he often needs a reason to care about the information before it sticks.

Rae is different. She and I both tend to collect facts simply because we find them interesting. Channing wants to know how something works, why it matters, or what he can do with the information.

Kids do not all need the same path into learning. They need a way in.

We have gotten far too attached to the idea that learning has to look like school. Children need direct instruction. Sometimes they need to practice phonics, multiplication facts, handwriting, or another skill that does not magically turn into a fun real-life activity.

But they also need time to play, get bored, make things, solve problems, work through disagreements with other kids, help around the house, follow their interests, and participate in the world around them.

That is learning too.

Whether you homeschool or simply want to recognize more of the learning already happening in your family, here are eleven places to look.

1. Let Them Cook

Cooking is practically a curriculum hiding in your kitchen.

Rae cooks, and fractions made more sense to her there than they ever did on a worksheet. One-half cup means something when you are holding the measuring cup. Two one-quarter cups becoming one-half cup suddenly has a purpose.

On paper, fractions were just numbers that did not mean much to her. In a recipe, those numbers affected whether dinner turned out right.

Cooking can also involve chemistry, reading, sequencing, temperature, nutrition, time management, and problem-solving. Let your child double a recipe, cut one in half, figure out a substitution, or decide how long several dishes need to cook so everything finishes around the same time.

Yes, letting a kid help often takes longer and makes a bigger mess.

It is still worth it.

2. Grow Something

You do not need an acre of land to learn from gardening. One tomato plant or a pot of herbs can create plenty of questions.

Why is this plant leaning toward the window? Why did one seed sprout and another did not? What is eating holes in the leaves? Why are some peppers hot? What happens if we water too much?

Instead of immediately supplying every answer, look it up together. Measure the plant. Pay attention to the weather. Identify the bug. Compare what happened in shade and sun.

Gardening can lead naturally into biology, weather, measurement, food systems, nutrition, and environmental science. It also teaches something harder to put on a worksheet: patience.

You cannot make a tomato ripen faster because you are tired of waiting for it.

3. Let Them Help With Real Work

Sometimes allowing children to help makes a job less convenient. They move more slowly. You have to explain things. Sometimes you even have to redo part of the job afterward.

Let them help anyway.

Raking leaves, pulling weeds, washing the car, sorting laundry, assembling furniture, cleaning something, or holding the flashlight while an adult makes a repair all give children experience with how a household actually works.

Instead of treating the child as an extra set of hands, talk through what you are doing. Why are we putting these leaves in this pile? How do we know which screwdriver fits? Why does laundry get separated? Why does salt help with ice?

Responsibility matters, but so do sequencing, estimation, tool use, observation, and learning how to finish a job that needs to be done.

Sometimes education looks a lot like chores.

4. Play Board Games

Board games can teach math, reading, strategy, probability, planning, memory, and flexible thinking without announcing that any of those things are happening.

They also create social problems that adults cannot reproduce very well with a worksheet. Someone changes your plan. Someone gets the space you wanted. You have to wait. You misunderstand a rule. You lose even though you thought you were going to win.

Children have to decide what to do with the frustration.

That matters.

If you want to make the learning more visible, occasionally ask your child to keep score, manage the game money, explain the rules to someone new, or tell you why they made a particular move. You do not need to turn every game into a lesson. The game is already doing plenty.

5. Let Them Handle the Money

Math becomes much less abstract when the answer determines whether you can afford something.

If your child is old enough, let them hand over the money at the register. Give them a spending limit and let them decide what fits inside it. Compare two sizes of the same product. Look at a sale price. Figure out whether there will be enough left for something else.

There is a big difference between seeing:

$10 – $6.47 = ?

on a page and having ten dollars in your hand while trying to decide which two things you want most.

One is a math problem.

The other is a reason to know the math.

6. Watch the Movie

For some kids, reading is not the easiest doorway into a subject.

Channing will listen to an audiobook much more readily than he will sit down and read a novel. If there is a movie version afterward, we usually watch that too. Then we compare them. What changed? What stayed the same? Which version explained something better? Why might the filmmakers have made a different choice?

That is still literacy.

It is comprehension, comparison, character, setting, perspective, and storytelling without requiring independent reading to be the price of admission.

Movies can also open up history and geography. If a story takes place during another period or in another part of the world, we can talk about what life was like there, find the place on a map, or look up which parts of the story were based on real events.

For a child who struggles with reading, a movie does not have to be the lazy alternative to the book.

Sometimes it is another way in.

7. Follow the Obsession

This may be the most important one for a child who does not naturally care about school subjects.

Channing does not collect random facts for fun the way Rae and I tend to. He wants information when it connects to something he already cares about.

He loves storms, so he chooses videos about weather.

He is not waking up thinking, I would like to study meteorology today.

He wants to understand storms. Meteorology is what he discovers on the way.

The same thing can happen with almost any interest. Skateboards can lead to friction, bearings, engineering, design, manufacturing, history, and geography. Trains can lead to transportation, engines, maps, industry, and physics. Baking can lead to chemistry. Basketball can lead to statistics. Minecraft can lead to architecture, resources, planning, and even history, depending on where the curiosity goes.

The interest does not have to be a reward for finishing the schoolwork.

It can be the doorway into the schoolwork.

8. Let Them Get Bored

I think adults are too afraid of children being bored.

An empty afternoon creates a problem: What am I going to do now?

If we solve that problem for them every time, they never get much practice solving it themselves.

Maybe they draw. Build something. Go outside. Invent a game. Dig a hole. Rearrange their room. Take something apart. Find another bored kid and negotiate what they are going to do together.

Boredom asks children to generate an idea instead of simply consuming the next one handed to them. That requires creativity, self-direction, persistence, and the ability to tolerate an empty moment.

Being able to entertain yourself is a life skill.

9. Go Somewhere and Notice Something

A field trip does not have to involve admission tickets, matching shirts, or an elaborate lesson plan.

Go to the library. Walk through a farmers market. Visit a museum. Hike a trail. Walk downtown and look at the oldest buildings. Go to a creek and find out what lives there. Sit at a skatepark and watch how people use the ramps. Visit a historic site or community event.

Then notice something.

You do not need to arrive with ten educational objectives. One good question is enough.

Why was this building made this way? What kind of bird is that? Why is the river higher than it was last month? Who lived here before us?

Sometimes fifteen minutes somewhere new creates a question that lasts for days.

10. Let Them Solve the Problem Before You Do

Adults are efficient. If we know the answer, it is tempting to give it.

Try waiting sometimes.

If something breaks, ask what your child thinks happened. If a plant is dying, investigate possible reasons together. If a bookshelf will not fit where they wanted it, hand them the tape measure. If they want something expensive, help them figure out how long it would take to save for it.

The goal is not to watch them struggle indefinitely with something you could easily fix. It is to give them a little room to think before the adult solution arrives.

Real problems teach a powerful sentence:

I do not know the answer yet, but I can figure something out.

That confidence is useful far beyond school.

11. Let Learning Wander

You do not always need to know where the lesson is going before you begin.

Start with one real question.

Why do skateboard wheels spin for so long?

That might lead to bearings. Bearings lead to friction. Friction leads to materials. Materials lead to manufacturing. Manufacturing leads to where products are made.

Now a question about a skateboard has wandered into physics, engineering, economics, geography, and history.

That is not failing to stay on topic.

That is what curiosity looks like when we give it enough room to move.

Maybe We Do Not Need to Disguise School at All

I called this post 11 Ways to Disguise School as Real Life, but the more I think about it, the title has it backward.

Maybe we do not need to disguise school as real life.

Maybe we need to stop acting as though real life is not educational.

Children still need instruction. A struggling reader still needs someone to teach reading. Math skills still have to be learned. There will always be things we practice simply because they are useful skills to have.

But a five-year-old also needs time to play and experience the world. A twelve-year-old who struggles with a textbook still deserves chances to discover that he can understand complicated things. Children need enough room to wonder, try, fail, fix, build, listen, watch, disagree, investigate, and come back with another question.

Not every child will become someone who collects facts just for the pleasure of knowing them.

That is okay.

Some children need to know what the information is for before they care about it. Some need to hear the book instead of reading it. Some need to take the machine apart before they want to understand the science behind it.

Our job is not to make every child learn in exactly the same way.

It is to help them find a way in.

We should be raising people who know how to ask questions, look for answers, solve problems, follow an interest, and keep learning even when nobody is assigning it anymore.

Because eventually school ends.

Life does not.
