Owl Creek Park River Access Accessibility Review

(Formerly Bonehole Swimming Basin)

Owl Creek Park River Access (formerly known as Bonehole Swimming Basin) is one of those hidden gems that makes you want to linger just a little longer. We had such a great time here that we actually visited twice in the same week.

What’s funny is that even some locals we met didn’t know where this spot was. Somehow, we managed to find it easily, and I’m so glad we did. It turned out to be a perfect place to go swimming with the kids.

Getting There & Accessibility

The river access is fairly easy for a natural area. The walk down to the water is on a gravel path that isn’t too steep, but if you use mobility aids or have balance issues, you may want to take your time. The park itself was clean, and the people there were friendly, which made the whole experience even better.

For families with young children, there’s a gradual entry into the water that was perfect for my toddler to splash safely.

One thing to note: there aren’t trash cans near the river. Be prepared to bring a bag and carry out any trash you create so the area stays as clean and beautiful as it is now.

I also recommend wearing river or water shoes. People do fish in this area, so there’s always a chance of fish hooks in the water. Water shoes also help protect your feet from sharp shells, rocks, and other hidden hazards while swimming.

And definitely pack a cooler with drinks and snacks. You’ll probably want to stay for several hours, and having cold drinks and food on hand means you won’t have to cut your visit short because you’re hungry or thirsty.

Features & Fun

There’s just something about natural swimming holes that makes them so much fun, and Owl Creek is no exception. My kids had a ball climbing up onto the bluffs at the end, chatting with other kids, swinging from the rope swing, and even jumping out of trees into the river.

One of the standout features is a large tree with a rope swing hanging over the water. My son Channing, who isn’t usually a daredevil, actually gave it a try, and it was such a fun surprise to see him get brave enough to swing out over the river.

Near the rock bridge, you’ll find what locals jokingly call “the jacuzzi.” It’s basically a small pool formed by rocks right next to the bridge. The water isn’t warmer than the rest of the river, but it’s a fun, social spot where people hang out and laugh together.

Channing also took advantage of the fishing opportunities while we were there. He made a new friend who happened to have an extra pole, and the two of them spent part of the afternoon fishing. At one point, they were floating on their backs in the river, poles in hand, casually fishing as they drifted along. It was hilarious to watch and one of those simple summer moments I’ll always remember.

If you have kids who might enjoy a river float but aren’t ready for a long, four-hour trip, Owl Creek offers a great alternative. Bring your own inner tubes and you can paddle or walk a short way upriver, then float back down to the rock bridge. It gives you the fun of a floating experience without the extra costs, rentals, or complicated shuttle arrangements that come with longer floats.

There are also a couple of small waterfalls flowing over the bridge, adding to the peaceful vibe of the park.

Nature & Wildlife

The kids had a blast exploring. They caught tiny fish, crawfish, bugs, and even found clams or mussels in the water. Raeleigh spent a lot of time trying to catch lizards, snakes, and other small critters. This is a good reminder to talk with kids about wildlife safety before visiting. Missouri does have poisonous water snakes, so it’s best to give all snakes—and really any wild animals—a wide berth for safety.

We collected some shells, made new friends with other kids at the park, and enjoyed hours of swimming. The scenery here is gorgeous. The trees are lush and green, and the river reflects not only the blue of the sky but also the vibrant greens around it. It’s the kind of view that makes you stop and just take it all in.

Final Thoughts

Owl Creek Park River Access is a relaxing, family-friendly spot that offers both beauty and accessibility. The gravel path, gradual water entry, and welcoming atmosphere make it a great choice for families, including those with young kids or visitors looking for an easier walk to the water.

It might be a bit of a local secret, but if you’re lucky enough to find it, it’s worth every minute you spend there. We enjoyed it so much that we visited twice during our recent Missouri adventure.
