🌿 Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Recreation Area — A Midwest Mimi Park Review 🌿

I’ve learned that sometimes the places that look ordinary on a map turn out to be the ones that give me the most peace. Lake Le-Aqua-Na was one of those places for us.

Welcome to Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Park — where peaceful trails, tall pines, and hidden lakes invite you to slow down and soak up nature’s beauty. #LakeLeAquaNa #IllinoisStateParks #MidwestAdventures

We spent a slow, gentle afternoon there as a family. The park was green and lush, with trails winding past a little creek, a wooden bridge, and even a small waterfall. My kids always love our nature adventures, but this time they were especially excited to explore the lake; and honestly, so was I. Water has always felt like an equalizer for me. It takes years off my joints and lets me move more freely so I can actually play with my kids.

The beach was nearly empty, which I loved. Just a couple of other families, leaving space for quiet and the sound of water lapping the shore (at least when my kids’ laughter and squeals didn’t ring louder than nature.) But honestly, that’s one of my favorite sounds: my kids happily playing, with a backdrop of trees and water. That’s my kind of day: no crowd noise, less sensory overwhelm, and the unbridled joy of childhood.

There’s a playground for the kids, spots to fish, and camping if you want to extend your stay. And the sunset over the lake? Absolutely worth staying for. Watching the sky change colors reminded me that even in this messy, unpredictable life, we really are doing okay.

A few practical notes if you’re planning a visit:

Swimming: There was some algae in the water. Not a ton because we could mostly avoid it, but it’d be nice if the park cleaned it up a bit. Still, it kind of added to that wild, natural vibe. My son Channing, who’s 11, enjoyed throwing it wildly… and didn’t even hit his siblings this time!
Water Depth: The water gets deeper very gradually, which was perfect for our toddler, Royce. This was his first time swimming in a lake since he learned to walk, and he loved it! He wants so badly to swim with his siblings, but he’s not quite there yet skill-wise.
Accessibility: There’s no lifeguard, so if you have kids, be ready for full-on water watch duty. Also, if you deal with mobility challenges like I do, be prepared: the walk from the accessible parking lot to the beach is a bit of a trek. It’s doable with a wheelchair or walker, thanks to a sidewalk, but it’s not exactly close.
Food & Drinks: Pack a cooler. We didn’t, and we definitely regretted not having snacks and drinks on hand. I don’t know about yours, but swimming always makes my kids sure they’re starving!

Overall, Lake Le-Aqua-Na felt like one of those hidden Midwest gems; quiet, scenic, and gentle enough for days when my body can’t handle crowds or chaos. If you’re craving green spaces, slow walks, and space to breathe, it’s worth checking out, especially if you’re looking for a peaceful place to swim and cool off in the lake.
